It. Is. Done. We started out on a journey to create a quiet, beautiful, and simple space and it has far exceeded our expectations. We will update with our office reveal soon enough, but in the meantime, here’s how to pick cabinets as I know we couldn’t possibly be the only ones out there totally overwhelmed by the idea of picking through hundreds of ideas and brands.

Enough of that! Here are the details. We partnered up with MasterBrand Cabinets and Diamond Cabinets, a brand within MasterBrand’s family of brands, because we wanted to work with someone who knew and understood a redesign project. Diamond had exactly what we were looking for in a simple, clean design for the door as well as the beautiful white paint. MasterBrand is kind of like Target and I KNOW you love Target like I do. The number of styles and organization features reminds us of the vast selection at Target. They are experts and take design seriously. You can ask questions, look at samples and find whatever you need so you can compare and make well thought out decisions. It is not worth driving all over town and trying to remember what things look like. Trust us. You will be stressed and exhausted. Instead, count on someone you can trust like MasterBrand and just get to work.

When you are ready to pick out cabinets you really aren’t ready at all. You think it’s all about door and color but you learn that there’s different woods, and different brands are able to include different features. We believe the best way to start is with your budget, then you can start to get excited looking at ideas on pinterest and you’ll notice we have quite a few boards for home design such as kitchen, bedroom, living room, home office, bathroom and just for the home, so clearly we get excited as well.

Next up, style. We kept things really simple because we wanted to be able to change things with time without taking on a major project again. Once you have your style picked, go through the brands you selected based on price again to weed out any that don’t have a match on style and color options. Diamond was a perfect fit because they are a great price, good quality and they had our style/color. You may be tempted to start looking at other details in this process but it’s going to boil down to what you want, is the overall door look more important or the extra features. You may find a brand that has both or you may need to sacrifice a little of the features to get the look.

We wanted both the look and functionality which is again why Diamond was the best fit. We have soft close doors and drawers and the clean, craftsman look. After far too much research we settled with Montgomery for the style because we love how Diamond keeps it so approachable and it can hold up to traditional, modern or classic styles so we can change things out as we like.

Light is so important to us, it’s what creates beautiful photos, what lifts our mood and allows us to really see each other so we love pulling light into every room, whether through a window or artificial. We added lights under the shelves and in our bookcases and I can’t wait to show you how it takes things to a whole new level, especially at night.

When you’re ready you’ll want to find on of MasterBrand’s authorized dealers with their Dealer Locator and will work with them to determine what can be achieved in your budget.  So much better than stressing about things. Just taking it one step at a time then talking with a local will change your whole experience. Just reach out to dealers in your area to learn more about what options fit best into your budget.

After figuring out your style you need to pick a wood species. Again, this is preference as some will show through certain paints or stains, but for us it was mostly about durability and paintability. Is that even a word? This is an office that’s used every day by both children and adults we don’t need it getting scratched and dinged with every touch. MasterBrand’s dealers can help you determine which wood species and finish combination is best by showing samples of different varieties to ensure that you are completely happy with the finished look? I love seeing things in person and it helps us to all be on the same page when we can have an expert to help move us in the right direction.

Maple is the wood species we used. We felt that this would be a stronger wood and that it would look better painted white versus having any grain showing through. It is exactly what we had hoped for. You're ready to start a little facelift project on your house but what seemed like fun now seems crazy. The finish is obviously white, but again this was a choice so that we could reflect a lot of light, things look cleaner and help to lighten emotions and mental wellness, but also it’s a great way for us to never be stuck to one design. We can easily swap out colors and go for anything we want in the room.

We really went back and forth on the hardware. At first I wanted to really kick things up a little with specialized hardware, but Cade made a point that I have to completely agree with, we still want this space to feel simple and kid friendly. Once the kids are older we can go a little fancier but lets keep things simple and timeless for right now. I love that. We found the perfect hardware with Atlas Hardwares. It’s the Champagne  which adds a real warmth to such a white room. They maybe be simple, but they are beautiful and the quality is superb.

Again, I’m like a broken record but I really think timeless is the way to go. Both Diamond and Atlas are just that.

  6. As a long time follower of oh sweet basil on Facebook and other outlets I find it so sad that you show so many personal things of your family to the online world full of child predators and those that are wanting to harm children. That cake smash of your sons birthday? I pray that you will see the dangers of putting so many personal things out there for bad people to see.

    • Hi Meghan,

Thank you so much for your sweet concern. I can tell by the way that you wrote it that you took the time to be thoughtful and kind when expressing yourself. I have to tell you, that’s not always the case with reader comments. Something like what we are wearing or that avocado was used as a topping on taco soup can get us some pretty heated comments. I know that your’s comes from a different place and so I hope that I can respond in a way that truly expresses where we stand on things and that you will maybe be up for seeing it from our point of view.

We completely agree with you about safety. In fact, we are known as the bloggers that withhold far more than anyone else to a point that people think it’s ridiculous that we wont say our children’s names, post when we are out and about (for example if we are on vacation even our social media posts that appear to be real time are actually after we’ve returned home.) and on and on. We take extreme measures on things one may not even think to be a risk and the security team we have that makes sure to block things and monitor every little bit of activity from multiple places around the world. Now does this protect our children completely? No. Ugh, it makes me want to cry just to have to say that. What in the world is wrong with people that we have to worry so much about our safety?!
Anyway, we have taken extra courses and people would be surprised about how incredibly unsafe their social media accounts, email etc all are, but we also cannot live in fear. It’s not healthy. So we protect on every level that we can and occasionally we share images we feel are appropriate. Which is why you’ll never see a bathtub picture or anything concerning our children’s schools etc. I’m sorry if the cake was offensive at all. He was in fact shirtless purely because I thought it would be an easier cleanup but again, I can see how this could be a worry for another.
I guess in the end we each have to respect and trust that Moms are doing the best job they can and that sometimes we may not agree on certain choices but they are each our own decisions. It’s a hard world to live in as a blogger. Unfortunately everything we do is criticized or judged. We have felt strongly that for some reason we are supposed to be doing this job and sharing our story as a family. There are those out there who have struggled with HG like me and needed to hear our story, others who are struggling with their family and have expressed great love at the reminder we offer that family still means something in this day and age. That’s our hope, to keep sharing good things.

We are truly so aware of our children’s safety and take it quite seriously. Even if that means that others think we are over protective. If you ever have a concern you’re welcome to use our contact page and email us directly. And thank you, thank you for sticking with us on our journey through this blog. We cannot truly express how much each reader means to us, and I sincerely mean that.
      xoxo
