Holy Shizzle. This fried inside out pizza is the best thing ever. EVER. I can’t even think of anything to say about it. I’m in a coma, a coma of love. This all started with a little post about the perfect Pepperoni Pizza…

Here I was, trying out half a bazillion brands of pepperoni, flour, cheese, oh my gosh and recipe testing a killer pizza sauce recipe when my mind suddenly started thinking of other ways to do the recipe. This happens all too often. It’s why I end up with posts about Naked Californians, Deep Fried 7 layer Dip Taquitos, Bacon Wrapped Avocados, etc, etc  I get distracted by the possibilities with food whenever I’m making something. I guess in some ways it’s good because we got this out of it, but in other ways I’m always trying to get things down on paper before I forget and I end up taking forever to finish my present task.

Oh my gosh. Every darn time I load a picture in here I find my stomach growling out load. No exaggeration. It’s 4:30 in the afternoon, I just had a raspberry lemon meringue cookie (stay tuned, that’s coming in a few weeks), totally not hungry yet, but my stomach remembers this baby from yesterday. “GET IN MA BELLY!!!” Who knew that putting the parmesan cheese back in the cheese drawer and seeing our favorite brand of Pepperoni, Margherita, and Babybel cheese would “ignite, the light….” oh shoot now Katy Perry has joined the post.

Katy Perry and Fried Mozzarella

Tell me the truth, can you resist singing along to Katy Perry? Honestly? I mean, I never listen to her music, but if it comes on Pandora (yes, I’m all about Pandora), the grocery store or heaven forbid the radio in the car I cannot resist! I MUST sing along!! She’s catchy, she’s certainly catchy.

Back to the important stuff. Here’s what I did…

I took a Babybel Mozarella cheese (I love those stinking things), put a pepperoni on top, holding the pepperoni I rolled it in our favorite Progresso Italian Panko Bread Crumbs (We are Panko Obsessed. Just check out these BBQ Bacon Cheddar Chicken Strips) and then hurried and threw the whole thing in hot oil, flipped it, fried again and scooped the whole thing into a dish of warmed marinara. It actually held together really well until I began photographing and then the cheese started to ooze a little. Clearly this was crazy tempting so I had no choice but to dig in. Perfection, folks, pure perfection.

Is Pizza Sauce and Marinara Sauce the Same?

The taste of marinara sauce seems to be more complex than the pizza sauce.

But, they are often used interchangeably.

Does Pepperoni Have to Be Refrigerated?

Pepperoni, whole and unopened can be stored in the pantry.

Once it is opened, it should be refrigerated.

Is Pepperoni Made From Beef?

Pepperoni is made from cured pork and beef mixed together and seasoned with paprika or other chili pepper.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • In a small skillet heat the oils over medium heat.
  • Place a pepperoni slice on top of each round of cheese, while holding the pepperoni in place press the cheese into the breadcrumbs, sprinkle a little on top and press that in, turning over once and pressing the breadcrumbs against the sides as well.
  • Dip the cheese back into the milk on both sides and back into the bread crumbs again.
  • Quickly add to the hot oil.
  • Allow to cook for 30-60 seconds or until the breadcrumbs begin to brown.
  • Carefully, but quickly flip the cheese and cook until browned on the other side.
  • Using a slotted spoon, lift the cheese out of the oil, allowing to drip for a moment and place in a small dish with warmed sauce.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

These are great served as appetizers.
I use two oils because I love the flavor from the olive oil and the canola doesn't burn as fast. If you need to use one or the other you can.
Store left overs in the refrigerator
