Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce
This old fashioned apple cake recipe is loaded with fresh apples and warm spices, baked with an irresistible chewy, caramelized top, and served with rich homemade caramel sauce. It’s an easy, cozy dessert that’s perfect for apple season!

- 1 Cup Sugar
- ¼ Cup Brown Sugar
- ½ Cup Butter softened
- 2 Large Eggs
- 2 teaspoons Vanilla
- 2 Cups Flour
- ¾ teaspoon Salt
- ¾ teaspoon Nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons Cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon Ground Cloves
- ½ teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 3 Cups Granny Smith or Honey Crisp Apples, peeled and chopped to 1/4-1/2" chunks
For the Caramel Sauce
- ¾ Cup Brown Sugar
- ¼ Cup White Sugar
- ¼ Cup Heavy Cream or whole milk
- ½ Cup Butter
- ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- ¼ teaspoon Fine Sea Salt
Instructions
- Preheat an oven to 350 ℉.
- Spray an 8x11 inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the sugars and butter until smooth. We prefer to use a standing or hand mixer. It's important the butter is softened.1 Cup Sugar, ½ Cup Butter, ¼ Cup Brown Sugar
- Add the egg and vanilla, mix until just combined.2 Large Eggs, 2 teaspoons Vanilla
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda and baking powder.2 Cups Flour, ¾ teaspoon Salt, ¾ teaspoon Nutmeg, 2 teaspoons Cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon Ground Cloves, ½ teaspoon Baking Soda, 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- Stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, and using a rubber spatula, fold the apples into the mixture.3 Cups Granny Smith
- Pour the batter into the baking dish and bake for 35-45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out of the center clean. Ours took 40 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in a saucepan over medium heat, add the sugars, cream, butter, salt and vanilla.¾ Cup Brown Sugar, ¼ Cup White Sugar, ¼ Cup Heavy Cream, ½ Cup Butter, ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract, ¼ teaspoon Fine Sea Salt
- Cook, stirring occasionally until smooth.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, continuing to stir for 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from heat.
- Allow the cake to cool for 10-15 minutes, serve with caramel sauce.

Cake without the sauce will keep for 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Add sauce when serving.
