I know, it's jello. But trust me on this one, the kids love having a raspberry marshmallow jello salad at #thanksgiving dinner and you'll be surprised that the adults do too! ohsweetbasil.com

I know, it’s jello, but before you get scared and run away give it a chance. Raspberry jello salad does’t have to be the star of your Christmas dinner, but it can be a fun side dish for the kiddos and for any adults wanting a blast from the past. And this jello salad is a definitely blast from my past.

Growing up in Washington was awesome, wet, but awesome. We didn’t live by much family, but the few cousins we did live by always joined us for the holidays. It didn’t matter what side of the family anyone was on, or even if they were family as we often had meals with friends as well. That was always the fun part, a bunch of people crammed into our house, gobs of food and loads of fun and conversation for everyone.

As the years went by there were a few dishes that always appeared on our table and raspberry jello salad from my Aunt Sharon was one of my personal favorites. I loved the stuff. She may be a doctor, but Aunt Sharon totally rocks in the kitchen. I always loooooved jello as a kid, and I secretly still do. In fact I laugh a little that everyone thinks jello is such a waste when I would totally devour it. This jello salad is different than a normal jello salad (I do stay away from the cottage cheese version.) because it has applesauce in it and sour cream and marshmallows on top. I don’t know why, but it’s delicious and everyone needs one jello salad that will totally make the kids happy for such a big holiday meal.

My family makes something similar. We use a can of cranberry sauce instead of raspberries and we use a 16oz container of sour cream and 2 cups mini marshmallows and let it sit overnight then blend the sour cream and marshmallows together until the marshmallows are dissolved for a smooth and creamy not chunky topping. Hands down my favorite holiday dish!

My mom used to make this, and I LOVE it. When she passed away I couldn’t find the recipe she had. But here you are, a life saver! Now my son always asks me to bring it 🙂 Thank you SO SO much!

This has always been my favorite! My mother made this growing up, and now I make it every holiday and sometimes whenever I am just craving it! I made it this year for thanksgiving and I pulled out the Taste of Oregon cook book that it comes from for the recipe. Well this year I actually read the whole page and I realized that my grandmother who was a dietician some 40+ years ago in a hospital in Oregon was credited in the cook book for the raspberry salad! I have loved this salad since childhood and never even knew that my own grandmother invented it! Thanks to Helen Proctor we now have this delicious dish!

NO WAY!!!!! My Aunt always makes it and I’d be so interested to know if she got the recipe from there or if it’s one that many people have a version of. I can’t wait to ask!

We’ve always made this raspberry jello marshmallow salad for holidays. It’s a great accompaniment to the turkey and ham or as a desert.

    1. Sweet Basil says:

It definitely is. And something that I will always love no matter how old I get.

Oh my goodness! I am also from Washington and we had this very same jello each Thanksgiving and Christmas from the time I was a little girl. I brought the recipe with me to my first Christmas with the in-laws when I got married thirty years ago and we still enjoy it twice a year – every year. One of our funniest memories is when a 10-year old cousin ate the entire topping off the pan of jello before it ever made it to the Thanksgiving table. Nobody could believe it, and we’ve NEVER let her forget either! Hahahaha!

Haha! No way!!! I love that there’s a memory like that with it! haha!

I loved the raspberry jello salad. Delicious, and easy to prepare. Sweet and refreshing. I mad a double recipe and placed it in a deep bowl. Rather than squares, everyone just scooped a helping! I made this for a pot-luck community pool party and it went over very well. Can’t wait to try your other recipes! I am hooked!!

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Thanks Grace! That’s a great idea to just put it in a deep bowl!
