These are the best peanut butter cookies I’ve ever had. Peanut Butter Meltaway Cookies are peanut butter cookies, stuffed with chocolate!
Ok, the time has come to talk about our all time favorite cookie combination. Peanut butter meltaway cookies are seriously the bee’s knees and I don’t even know what that means, but if it’s good then these cookies are it!
Look at those soft and fluffy peanut butter cookies stuffed with melty chocolate wafers (basically a big chocolate chip that’s been flattened).
Check out how easy it is to make them!
Our Sweet Basil Kitchen – Our First Cookbook!
This cookie recipe is also in our cookbook, Our Sweet Basil Kitchen so if you haven’t snagged yourselves a copy you’d better get on that!!
Not only do I love cookies, especially when I’m tired, anxious, stressed, or sad (hello emotional eater!!), but more importantly I love to give them away. I’m such a firm believer that if ever you are feeling the weight of the world it’s time to turn the attention outward. Give a little love to someone else. Yes, the work will still be there when you get back, but somehow the load will seem lighter and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you accomplish things once you’ve served others.
Peanut Butter Meltaway Cookies
It’s never a bad day to snuggle up with a good book and peanut butter meltaway cookies or to drop by someone’s house and spread a little love.
Especially since not only are they filled with chocolate but they are rolled in cinnamon sugar which is surprisingly the best flavor combination EVER. We hope you love them as much as our family does!
Oh, and before I forget, these cookies freeze beautifully both as the dough and after baking! Hooray!!
Could You Substitute Biscoff For Peanut Butter in Cookies?
If peanut butter is not the primary source of fats in the recipe, you should be fine.
I would compare the fat content of the two.
Biscoff can definitely be substituted for peanut butter in peanut butter sandwiches.
Can You Use Salted Butter In Recipes That Call For Unsalted Butter?
If you do not have unsalted butter for a recipe, you could use salted butter.
Just leave out the added salt in the recipe.
Can Peanut Butter Cookies Be Frozen?
Cookies should be frozen individually after they’ve cooled completely, meaning they should be placed on a baking sheet, not touching, until frozen solid.
Once frozen, cookies should be placed in a freezer bag and can be frozen for up to 3 months.

What are jerseys meltaways? Where can I buy them?
Sweet Basil
Hello! They are melting wafers. I actually don’t know if Hershey’s still makes them but Ghiradelli does. Here is a link to what they look like on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3xdRVyA. You should be able to find them at most grocery stores.
Laura
My daughter and I just made these for the third time. That’s how good they are!
We substituted chipits for the meltaways with perfect results.
Thanks so much for the fantastic recipe.
Cheers,
Laura and Annie
Sweet Basil
Thank you so much Laura and Annie! Love to hear that you are baking together!
Liz
Should you chill the dough before baking?
Sweet Basil
Nope, it’s not necessary.
Lindsey
I made these this weekend and they turned out fantastic!!! I couldn’t find anything called Hershey’s Meltaways Chocolates, and I saw that this was originally posted several years ago so I figured maybe those don’t exist anymore… so I made them using Dove Chocolates. I wasn’t sure if those would work since they’re just regular chocolates and not Meltaways, but they were sooooooo good! I just wanted to share that in case anyone else was in the same boat and didn’t know what to use! Thanks for this delicious recipe!!!!!
Sweet Basil
Thank you for the tip Lindsey! Let’s be honest…probably any chocolate is going to be delicious in these! Haha! Hershey’s Meltaway Chocolates are wafer shaped chocolates, so if you can’t find Hershey’s brand, any kind of chocolate melting wafer would work! Or Dove! LOL!
Kelly Wright
I have a question : does the chocolate get hard in the middle once it’s completely cooled? Or does it stay melted?
Sweet Basil
Hi Kelly! It gets hard when it cools. I like to eat them when they are warm but even when they are cool, they are delish!
Nubian Clement
How many serving can you make from this recipe?
Sweet Basil
It makes about 2 dozen.
LA Keuhlen
Yield is “1 Recipe” but how many cookies is this 1 recipe supposed to make? Thanks.
Sweet Basil
About two dozen. Enjoy!!
Kenz Miller
These cookies looked so yummy so we tried making them tonight and they were raw on the inside after the full 10 minutes of cooking. And the chocolate didn’t melt well in the center so there was no gooey pull. Any suggestions??
Sweet Basil
Hi Kenz,
It’s just a regular peanut butter cookie so unless the oven isn’t keeping a constant temperature it for sure shouldn’t be gooey. 🙁
Becky
In looking at the nutrition info, is it correct?! 4000+ calories per cookie? That doesn’t seem right. I know they won’t be low calorie, but that seems high.
Sweet Basil
Hi Becky,
It looks like it’s pulling for the entire recipe, and not cookies, I’ll look into it.
Terri 209
The recipe yielded 26 cookies for me. So 4,934 divided by 26 equals just shy of 190 calories per cookie.
Janet
Can’t find any Hershey’s Meltaways, but I did see at Target some Hershey’s Bliss chocolates with meltaway centers. Is this what you used?
Sweet Basil
Shoot, no they are actually little chocolate discs. Other brands make them now too, and they are always by the chocolate chips.
Diana
Why call them meltaways and have all of us looking for something that doesn’t exist?
Can you change the name?
Sweet Basil
The melty chocolate in the middle is what gives them their name.
mel
I know this sounds pretty silly question to ask but is there a substitute for the peanut butter?
Sweet Basil
You could try to use almond butter or nutella but I have not tried either so I couldn’t guarantee results 🙂
Jaye
Could you substitute coconut oil for the peanut butter?
nyomie acosta
Would it b the end of the world if I didn’t use a mixer??
Sweet Basil
Definitely not. You can stir everything with a wooden spoon and it will turn out great!
Anna
Can you use regular chocolate chips instead of the meltaways? Would love to try this recipe!
Sweet Basil
Hi Anna,
The chocolate chips have a hard time melting down enough, but I have used a chunk of milk chocolate, like those bricks you can buy at the store (not a hersheys bar or baking chocolate).
Diana
I just realized I don’t have All purpose flour! 😔 Could I use Almond flour?
Thanks!
Sweet Basil
We’ve never tried it, but it’s worth a try. I’ve heard people say it substitutes 1:1 but can change the structure of the cookies. Let us know how it goes if you give it a shot!
Anna @ Crunchy Creamy Sweet
I will take a dozen, pretty please! 🙂 Pinned!
Sweet Basil
Thanks, Anna!!
Linda
I am having a really hard time finding the Hershey’s meltaways. Even on their website. It seems the only thing I can find are the kisses. Help . .. . can’t wait to make these!
Sweet Basil
Oh darnit! Target and Walmart carry more Hershey’s specialty items than grocery stores around here. If you still can’t find them I bet a few chocolate chips in the middle would be great.
Anne
You should be able to find them in the candy isle
aimee @ like mother like daughter
oh my gosh, peanut butter cookies are one of my favorite desserts, and with chocolate in the middle, especially gooey melty chocolate. This sounds amazing. I need to make these (or at least eat these) now!
Lauren
Made these yesterday and they were a huge hit! Delicious!!
Sweet Basil
You did??!! Yay! This totally made my day. Woohoo!
Madison
About how many cookies would you say the recipe makes?
Sweet Basil
Good question. I eat so many during the process that I never have a perfect number, however this time I got about 2 dozen out of the recipe.

These Peanut Butter meltaways look and sound scrumptious…I’m sure they helps a lot when you get too tired of re-arrange and need a tea break. 😉 Have a wonderful week ahead.

I swear I commented on this post already but have clicked on it a few times the past 2 days from various pinterest boards. Let’s just say I’ve been here more than once to stare at these beauties 🙂

I love anything with chocolate, especially chocolate-cover cherry!
Robyn Stone | Add a Pinch
Oh bless us these look delicious. YUM!
Wendy
Pinterest boards aren’t so hard to organize in the beginning when you only have a few pins. But by the time you realize that you really need some subcatagories, you have hundreds of pins. That’s a lot of clicking to change things around. You could probably get some sort of repetitive motion injury! Reaching for these cookies could give your wrist a break. I am going to bake some in the name of safety. 🙂
Emily
Worst thing you could post today when I’m craving cookies and haven’t a meltaway in sight.
Audrey B.
Yum! I know what I’m doing this weekend.
Julie @ Table for Two
I completely agree with you! I tried to re-arrange mine a few months ago but I gave up. I just have one that’s savory and one that’s sweet for most food items. I really want to do a board with my recipes but seriously, just too hard with moving pins individually. Sigh!
This cookie, my dear, looks SO good!! I love the melty chocolate in the middle!!
Sweet Basil
Thanks, Julie! I am kinda thinking I’ll grab an intern to do it. 😉
Rachel Cooks
I’ve been trying to organize my boards too. I definitely think a few of these cookies would help the process along.

Ugh, I hear you! I just spent two HOURS last night rearranging my boards… it was not fun.
These cookies are my dream cookie! I love the gooey chocolate centers!
kelley {mountain mama cooks}
I’m right there with you! I organized (loosely) my Pinterest boards a few weeks ago but got overwhelmed. It’s definitely an art! I wish I’d had some cookies to keep me company. Maybe we need to plan a cookie/pinterest organizing party! Have a great weekend!!
Maria Tadic
These look so yummy…can’t really get any better than peanut butter and chocolate! I agree…making food for others is a favorite activity of mine. My husband’s office is a great place to “unload” all my baked goods (saves me from eating a whole batch of cookies myself!)
Shannah @ Just Us Four
Ooh, those look delicious! I long ago gave up on organizing my Pinterest boards because it was so difficult and ridiculous. I’m sure I’ll decide it needs to be done sometime in the future and will eat an entire batch of cookies while attempting to organize them.
Meagan @ A Zesty Bite
These look heavenly!
Abby @ The Frosted Vegan
Oh stop it with that melty center and peanut butter cookie, whoa whoa whoa!!
