Looking for a classic mid-western recipe? This Cheese frenchees deep fried grilled cheese recipe is a favorite for the super bowl!

As you already know, we love food and we love traveling, and of course we especially love trying out new foods while traveling. We seriously plan our trips around trying out what that area is known for in the food world. It’s so much fun and totally inspires us here at home. Cade alsways pushed for trying fun new places while traveling and I’m so grateful, but now I have a fun way to do the same thing from our own kitchen! Let’s start with how these Cheese Frenchees Deep Fried Grilled Cheese from Nebraska came about.
Let’s deep fry some grilled cheese sandwiches!

There’s this awesome new cookbook out by Cook’s Country (and you know how I adore them!) called, The Cook’s Country Eats Regional Cookbook and it is so fun! We’ve always loved hearing about where you all live and the recipes your region is known for (hello funeral potatoes in Utah, haha) and we have been having the best time ever reading through the book at night and trying things the next day. I mean, I’d never even heard of Frenchees, but they are amazing!

The cookbook is broken up by region and full of mouthwatering photos which is kind of a must in the world of cookbooks for me. We love the variety in the cookbook along with the fact that there aren’t just recipes but little blurbs about each one. We seriously feel like we have been getting to know our own country even better and we didn’t even have to leave our home.

I kind of insist that you click the link above and buy one for yourself. I know both Cade and I would love to hear what some of your local recipes are and if any made it into the book! Here’s what we will be trying next, Buttermilk Pie, Pimento Cheeseburgers, Babka, Heavenly Hots and Chiles Rellenos Casserole! Have you had any of those recipes?
Can Grilled Cheese Sandwiches be Reheated?
The best way to reheat a grilled cheese sandwich without it becoming soggy, is to reheat in the oven.
Reheat at 350 degrees until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasty crisp.
Do Grilled Cheese Sandwiches Need To Be Stored In The Refrigerator?
A grilled cheese sandwich should not be left out for more than 2 hours.
They should be wrapped in foil or plastic and stored in the refrigerator.

South Carolina Open Faced Ham and Corn Chowder Sandwich

oh my my!!!! so cheesy and delicious.
Sooooooo good! Now I’m craving them!
I grew up in Nebraska and on cheese frenchies! There is still a restaurant chain in Omaha, NE that makes them. Don & Millie’s. It’s making me homesick!
They are so dang good! You’ll have to give these a try and let us know what you think!
I cannot possibly be reading the nutrition information correctly- 4125 calories in one serving?? I realize deep-fried grilled cheese isn’t exactly health food, but ohhh man I don’t know if I can do it….
We have been having some issues with our nutritional information calculating out correctly. That sounds accurate for the whole recipe, not just for one serving. I’ll look into it. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!
Minot, ND. Our KFH made ham and cheese frenchy! They closed years ago, and this is the first I’ve seen the recipe. So excited to try the recipe with the cornflakes. Hope I can do it justice! Thank you
yay! enjoy! We would love to hear what you think!
A True Nebraska Favorite but You leave out 1 ingredient the True Original Cheese Frenchee had 1 slice dill pickle in each qaurter of the sandwich
Ohhhh I haven’t seen that but Cade would love it!
Nebraska girl here!
These are especially delicious served with a hot bowl of tomato soup on a chilly fall day!
That would be perfection!
I’m confused about the mayo. Is it on the inside of the sandwich or on the outside?
Hi Nancy, it’s on the inside of the sandwich. 🙂
Yes, definitely use crushed corn flakes. I grew up with King’s Food Host in Norman, Oklahoma. I’ve made these and they are incredible and just like King’s. Corn flakes is the way to go!
Can’t wait to try that!
Do you have to use a toothpick to hold it together when cooking or is there only enough oil in the pot to cover one side at a time?
The mayo and breading helps hold it all together and so you don’t have to do anything. 🙂
My Grandmother was a cook for Kings and I have made their recipe for Cheese Frenchees for over 30 years. They also had Tuna Frenchees. The only difference in their recipe was that they used corn flake crumbs. You can double or triple the batch, put them on cookie sheets, and freeze till firm, then package in ziploc bags. Take out and deep fry for quick and easy meals!
Oh I love your tips!! Thank you!!
Yea! I have savored the memories of King’s Cheese Frenchees I ate as a little girl in the early to mid 60’s in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I have many times tried to recreate the recipe. Good to know it was corn flake crumbs that they used. Oh, so good!
I can’t wait to try the cornflakes now too!
I have looked for this recipe for a long time. I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska where a drive in restaurant called Tiners served Cheese Frenchies, and also Tuna Frenchees. They were both delicious ! Great memories .
Oh I’m jealous! I’d love to try the real thing!
