Remember how we talked about the fact that my mom doesn’t like apple pie, and that she did like raspberry pie so it always got the happy face? Well, I think I could change her mind with this pie. In fact I believe this dutch apple pie with white chocolate butter sauce is the pie that all apple pie lovers and haters will go gaga over. After I created this pumpkin pasta with Fisher nuts I hurried and wrote them that I had an idea for my next post and that it involved pie. Clearly we all voted yes on posting it.

I think the biggest problem people have with a classic apple pie is that they don’t enjoy the mushy fruit. At least, that’s the most common thing that I hear.
But these apples are different.
You’ll start your apple pie by cooking the apples for about 10-15 minutes in a sauce pan over medium heat until they just start to turn tender. Not already tender, but just starting to soften and then they head straight into the pie.

How to Avoid a Runny Apple Pie
Some recipes call for cooking the pie low and slow until the apples break down, but I don’t love how much juice comes out that way. Other recipes call for pre cooking the apples until completely tender and cooked and then baking the pie on a higher heat. I actually don’t mind that method, but because the apple pie with tender but still firm apples seems to be the one winning over our friends and family members that don’t like apple pie I think I’ll stick with this one.

Ingredients for Dutch Apple Pie
For the Crust and Apple Pie Filling
- Pie Crust: all purpose flour, unsalted butter, salt, sugar, and ice water
- Apples: I prefer a combination of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples when I make apple pie.
- Sugar: adds sweetness to balance the tartness of the apples
- Flour: helps thicken the juices that cook off the apples
- Spices: Nutmeg and Cinnamon
- Salt: enhances all the flavors

For the Topping
- Flour: just regular all purpose flour works great
- Pecans: adds a great warmth and flavor to the topping, plus a little extra crunch, but you can’t even tell what it is. Your guests will totally be guessing at what you added to give the topping that little somethin’ somethin’ but never know it’s just a bunch of pecans from Fisher Nuts.
- PRO TIP: If you aren’t a pecan fan, walnuts can be used instead.
- Rolled Oats: adds texture and structure to the topping
- Brown Sugar: adds rich flavor and sweetness
- Salt: enhances all the flavors
- Butter: binds all the ingredients together to form the crunchy rich topping
For the White Chocolate Butter Sauce
- Butter: adds richness and is the base for the sauce, make sure it’s cold butter
- Powdered Sugar: sweetens the sauce
- Cream Cheese: make sure it is room temperature so it doesn’t get clumpy
- White Chocolate Melts: almond bark also works
The measurements for all the ingredients can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post. Keep scrolling down for all the details.

How to Make Dutch Apple Pie with White Chocolate Butter Sauce
I’m going to walk you through each step for making this outrageous apple pie. It’s so much easier than it looks because it looks so dang fancy. I’ll break it up into each of the different parts of the recipe.
For the Pie
- You’ll want to start preheating the oven and by making the pie crust. I won’t go into the details here since you can read all about it in that post. Roll out the pie dough using a rolling pin and place the bottom crust in a pie dish.
- Then you will cook the apples on the stove top just to tender them up a bit.
- When the apples have partially cooked, pour them into the pie crust and then add the oat topping all over the top (I’ll explain how to make that below).
- Bake the pie until golden brown and bubbling. While the pie is baking you can make the white chocolate sauce (explained below).
- Serve the pie warm with vanilla ice cream and the buttery white chocolate sauce.

For the Topping
- Combine all the ingredients except the butter in a small bowl and whisk everything together.
- Using a pastry cutter, cut in the butter and then use your hands to finish mixing. It should clump together when you squeeze it.
- PRO TIP: If you don’t have a pastry cutter, a fork works just fine too!
- Crumble the topping over the top of the apples.

For the Sauce
Do not make this sauce ahead of time. It’s best fresh. 🙂
- Add all the ingredients except the white chocolate to a small bowl and use an electric hand mixer to beat everything together.
- When you are ready to serve, heat up the sauce mixture in one bowl and the white chocolate in another bowl.
- Once they are both heated quickly stir them together and serve over the hot pie.
All of these instructions can also be found in the recipe card down below.

What is the Difference Between Dutch Apple Pie and Regular?
Regular apple pie has a pastry top. Dutch apple pie is topped with streusel instead of pastry. It’s like a combination of an apple pie and and apple crumble or crisp. Heaven!

What are the Best Apples for Baking?
We used a combo of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith. I know, you’re used to being told to go straight to granny’s, but trust me, the combination of the two gives the pie the perfect sweetness and flavor. Here are our favorite apples for baking:
- Granny Smith
- Honey Crisp
- Braeburn
- Macintosh
- Golden Delicious
- Ambrosia
- Gala
- Fuji

How Long Will Apple Pie Keep?
Apple pie will keep for 2-3 days at room temperature.
You can keep apple pie for an additional 2-3 days in the fridge.

Can You Freeze Apple Pie Before It is Baked?
Freezing apple pie before it is baked is the preferred method. It’s texture and flavor will be closer to fresh apple pie. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and foil and freeze up to 4 months in the freezer.
There is no need to thaw before baking. Place frozen pie on baking sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue baking for 35-40 minutes.

Dutch apple pie is one of my all time favorites! I mean, I’ve never come across a pie I didn’t like, but there’s some about those perfectly cooked apples with the crunchy oat topping that is out of this world! Then you add the white chocolate butter sauce and YOWZA!! You’re gonna be drooling over this one, friends!

Traditional Apple Pie

I’m going to make this NOW. I’m sure the guys will appreciate it after a long day of hunting.
I hope you all love it!
I made the Dutch Apple Pie with White Chocolate Butter Sauce for Thanksgiving……had I known it was going to be this good, I would have skipped my meal and had it for my entrée as well! The honey crisp apples were huge so I only had to use 2 of them. I think the I had a total of 8 cups of sliced apples. The topping was wonderful but the white chocolate butter sauce drizzled on the top put this apple pie over the top! SO GOOD. Thank you for sharing this.
YAY!!!! I am so thrilled to hear that! Thank you so much for your sweet words!
When you say oatmeal. .do you mean quick oats or old fashioned oats?
Hi Nicole,
It can actually be either. I prefer the rolled old fashioned oats, but we’ve made it enough both ways that I honestly just use whatever I have.
Thank you! Im making this for Thanksgiving tomorrow and cant wait to eat it! It looks delicious! 🙂
Yay! Enjoy!
Can you tell what are honey crisp apples thank you
Hi Kerry!! Honey Crisp apples are just a variety, you can use granny or eve golden delicious if you’d like. 🙂
I made this yesterday and I loved it! The crumb topping was so good and I really liked the added crunch from the pecans and oatmeal. It made quite a bit of topping, so I only used about half of it. We spent Thanksgiving at my husband’s fire station, so I didn’t make the white chocolate butter sauce for fear of it getting lost in the shuffle, but I am excited to make this again and try it with the sauce. This will be my go-to apple pie from now on.
