Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip is the ultimate dip to serve at any football game, tailgate, or sports get-together. Using the slow cooker makes this buffalo chicken dip easy and foolproof!
I don’t know a single person who has any self control when it comes to buffalo chicken dip. Not one!
But a problem I have seen with this staple football food is that once it sits out during the length of the game it can get cold, hard, dry and quite frankly not appetizing anymore.
By using the slow cooker, we are going to keep this shredded buffalo chicken dip hot, fresh with melty gooey cheese until everyone is scraping the sides of the bowl clean! Just dump all the ingredients in, stir, and forget about it!
So put on your favorite team’s hoodie and your comfiest fat pants, and sit down in front of the big game with a plate full of this slow cooker buffalo chicken dip! I guarantee you’ll want to go back for more!

How to Make Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip
It doesn’t get much easier than this! That is one of my favorite features of slow cooker recipes…easy!
Prep the dip: Combine cooked chicken, butter, buffalo sauce, ranch dressing, cream cheese, 1 cup of cheddar cheese and water in the slow cooker.
Cook the dip: Put on the lid and cook on low for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
Add some cheese: Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese over the top and replace the lid until the cheese is melted.
What to Serve with Slow Cooker Buffalo Chicken Dip
Shredded buffalo chicken dip is a unique football appetizer recipe in that you don’t just serve it with a bunch of chips or bread like some other recipes.
Here are some ideas of what to serve with buffalo chicken dip:
- Celery
- Bell Peppers
- Crackers
- Tortilla Chips
- Toast Points
- Broccoli (sounds crazy but it’s good)
- Cucumber slices
And if you use veggies, you’ll feel better about eating more and more dip!
How Long Does Buffalo Chicken Dip Last?
Buffalo chicken dip will keep for 3-5 days in the refrigerator if stored in an airtight container.
Does Buffalo Chicken Dip Need To Be Refrigerated?
Yes, this buffalo ranch chicken dip should be stored in the refrigerator. Note that buffalo chicken dip should not sit out at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Can You Freeze Buffalo Chicken Dip?
Technically you can freeze buffalo chicken dip; however, I’ve noticed that the dairy can separate from the cheese and chicken as it comes back to temperature upon reheating. The taste will still be great, but it won’t look as appetizing.
How to Reheat Buffalo Chicken Dip
Have lots of leftovers? No worries, this creamy buffalo chicken dip reheats well. Larger servings can be reheated in the slow cooker. Individual servings can be gently reheated in the microwave.
Can I Prep This Dip in Advance?
This dip takes barely 5 minutes of hands on prep work, but if you’d like to prepare it in advance you may. To do so, measure out all the ingredients and place in the slow cooker insert or a mixing bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 24 hours before cooking the dip.
How Do You Thicken Buffalo Chicken Dip?
Generally, buffalo chicken dip winds up being runny because you didn’t add enough chicken and used too much of the buffalo sauce and/or ranch. A low-fat cream cheese will also make the dip a little runnier.
What Is Buffalo Sauce Made Of?
Buffalo sauce is a hot sauce generally made with hot sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and butter.
What Kind of Buffalo Sauce Should I Use?
Traditionally, homemade buffalo chicken dip is made using Frank’s Original Red Hot Sauce.
Can I Make This Without a Slow Cooker?
Yes, this dip can be made in the oven if desired. However, we prefer using a slow cooker since it keeps the dip warm and prevents it from hardening during the game.
Tips for Making the BEST Buffalo Chicken Dip
- Slow cooker: We have this Hamilton Beach brand slow cooker and love it!
- Chicken: You can cook and shred the chicken yourself, or you can buy a rotisserie chicken from the store to save yourself some time. Your choice!
- Cream cheese: Use full-fat, brick-style cream cheese. Low-fat or whipped cream cheese will result in a runny dip.
- Ranch dressing: You need to use prepared ranch salad dressing in this recipe, NOT the ranch seasoning packets.
