When we first got married it was freezing cold and we were poor little college students, so we certainly did not own our own grill. We tried a few times to make a perfect steak by grilling it in a pan, broiling, and even baking the dang thing but it just wasn’t as good as grilled steak on the BBQ. Cade and I decided that we were going to figure out the best way to make a steak indoors and that’s exactly what we did. So, here’s how to make steak without a grill. Oh, and check the bottom of the post for my favorite cooking tips.
The first thing you want to grab is a grill pan. The raised edges totally help to create the nice grill marks and duplicate how a steak is grilled outside versus being flat on a pan like you normally cook meat inside. Next you’ll want to prepare your meat by getting it out of the fridge about 10 minutes before cooking. This allows the meat to relax and juices to redistribute and most importantly the temperature when cooking will be more even versus a cold center of steak.
Now comes the really easy part, drizzle a little Star Olive oil for Beef and Lamb in the grill pan and crank it up to high heat. Sprinkle both sides of the meat with season salt as you don’t have the smoke to give extra flavor. Now place the meat in the hot pan and turn down to medium heat. Cook about 7 minutes per side for larger pieces of steak and for a medium temperature. Flip the steak over and continue to cook for an additional 7 minutes or until the desired internal temperature.
This next part is crucial. Place the meat on a plate and tent with foil, allowing the meat to rest for 6-8 minutes. Again, you’re letting the juices redistribute which is important for a flavorful, juicy steak. Then serve!
And in case you need a little dessert after, I’m over at Pillsbury with this totally over the top chocolate lava skookie! The girls got to be my taste tester and if you follow me on instagram (@ohsweetbasil) you know that they loooooved it!
How Can You Tell If Steak Is Done?
If you don’t have a meat thermometer, the best way to gauge if steak is done, is to feel it.
If you’d like your steak medium-rare, it should feel like your cheek: tender and soft but still fleshy (as opposed to raw, which would be just soft).
If you want a medium steak, touch your chin: The steak should still be tender, but with some resistance.
How Can You Reheat Steak?
Here is a fun way to reheat steak.
Remove steak from refrigerator and let warm for a few minutes.
Heat a pan of water to low heat.
Put steak in an air tight freezer bag and place in warm water until it is warmed through (about 5 minutes).
You can also reheat in the microwave, covered, at l0w to medium power, in 30 second increments until heated through.

Hi,
I came across your website while looking up on how to cook steak! Just a question though, if you don’t put oil, will the steak burn or stick to the pan?

Wonderful post. I have always wondered how to cool a steak without drying it out when cooking in the house. I’ll be headed to the market tomorrow. Thanks.
