I have been sitting here forever trying to figure out a name for these things because they are kind of like those “turtle” chocolates people make except not because there are not nuts and the chocolate is on the bottom not a shell on top. Bites? But it’s a little more than a bite and truffles clearly wouldn’t work as they are nothing like a truffle. Snaps? I mean, they do snap when you bite them. And trust me, they are addicting little salted caramel pretzel snaps!

Our friend, Aaron gave us a try of a little salted caramel pretzel snaps treat at his house one night, but I haven’t ever seen them at the store, so I was stuck to make my own and I’m happy to say it’s the fastest recipe ever!

Quick and Easy Holiday Treat

I don’t even know if I should be calling it a recipe as there’s not really much to it. In fact, I was trying to hurry so I put two pieces of parchment out, one for me and one for our 10 year old and 6 year old. The 10 year old did the chocolate and caramel and the 6 year old placed pretzels and sprinkled salt. I chose to photograph their’s just to prove it could be done by a child.

Candy making was a whole process at my house growing up. We made gobs and gobs of candies, turtles, peanut butter balls, coconut balls, chocolate pizza, and more! It was such a fun time and I loved helping it.

It makes me a little sad to think about how I didn’t realize just what a special opportunity it was to be surrounded by family in a safe, loving home and to just be a carefree kid. I know that it’s like that for most kids, but I regret not taking more advantage of being a family. Now we all live far apart and holidays are often spent alone because it’s too far to travel to everyone. Such a bummer. But at least we can make our treats with our own families not and keep the tradition going.

Ingredients

  • 3 Bars Milk Chocolate Almond Bark, melted (a 14 ounce package has bars in 2 ounces each so you would need 3 bars or 6 ounces of chocolate)
  • 1/2 Bag Mini pretzels
  • 1/2 Bag Caramel squares, melted or more as needed. I also use a hunk of Peter’s Caramel Brick from Orson Gygi
  • Sea Salt

Instructions

  • Lay out wax or parchment paper, using a spoon, drizzle a little chocolate on the paper and smooth it out a little with the back of the spoon like you are painting a circle.
3 Bars Milk Chocolate Almond Bark
  • Drop three pretzels, slightly overlapping onto the chocolate and spoon a little melted caramel over all three.
1/2 Bag Mini pretzels, 1/2 Bag Caramel squares
  • Sprinkle with a little sea salt and then drizzle a little more chocolate.
    Sea Salt
  • Let set and store in Tupperware.

My daughter just made these and the caramel got so hard she could hardly eat them. I saw some where you add 1 or2 tbls. of water to the caramels when you melt them and mine came out prefect. caramel was soft. This recipe doesn’t add the water. Why was her caramel so hard? she said she could barely get it out of the dish to add to the pretzels?

      2. Sweet Basil says:

There are three reasons, the caramel could have been too old, not good enough quality (often store or generic brands do that) or it could have been heated too long which overcooks it and makes it hard. You shouldnt need to add any water. I prefer to buy the Peter’s caramel brick online or from orson gygi, a local baking store. It’s the best, not overpriced caramel especially for apple dipping in the fall. 🙂

      3. Lori Kaumans says:

If you add anything to the caramel, I would melt them with heavy cream, not water. I’ve seen some recipes were you melt caramels with a little bit of heavy cream.

      4. Sweet Basil says:

Yes, that is correct. However, adding cream also means that the caramel will stay soft and never fully stick to the pretzels. You’ll want to put in only a very small amount.

  2. Briana says:

Does anyone have any idea on how long these might keep? Looking to do them for Christmas and trying to get baking done early, I just don’t want the pretzels to go soft, or have problems. Could these handle 2 weeks in sealed Tupperware?

    1. Sweet Basil says:

If you used a food sealer they would be fine, but I feel that they go a little soft and stale after that long

    Hi!
These are very addicting!!! Thank you! I will try not to eat them all. I have a stoneware cooky sheet. I put the pretzels on the sheet, one at a time, then placed one Brach’s caramel on each, put them in the oven at a low temperature then dropped two chocolate chips (milk chocolate ) on each when the caramels were melted and still soft. I was probably too stingy with the chocolate! Allina all, very good and if I can stop eating them, they will be feat as gifts! Thank you for the great idea!!

    Merry Christmas (early)!

    1. Jeannette says:

      *great* not feat!!

      Aren’t they delicious?!

Quick question, should these be stored in the fridge if you are making them the night before an event? Will the caramel be rock hard?

    1. Sweet Basil says:

You can store them in tupperware in a cool panry. 🙂

  6. Evelyn Boucher says:

Thanks I will try these soon.

  7. Kristi @ Homestead Wishing says:

These look amazing! I will have to try them, thank you.

  8. Pearl says:

Im Wondering where to find the caramel brick? I’ve never heard of caramel bricks/loafs. Is that the only brand that can be used? If I can’t find it is there an alternative like the caramel squares candy?

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Hi Pearl, Baking stores sell it or amazon but you can certainly use the squares and melt them down slowly.

  9. PJ says:

I’m having difficulty with direction #1. I can’t picture what you mean: Lay out wax or parchment paper, using a spoon, drizzle a little on the paper and smooth it out a little with the back of the spoon like you are painting a circle. Drop three pretzels, slightly overlapping onto the chocolate. A pic maybe? These sound so good! Thank you.

    1. Sweet Basil says:

It’s just like making a puddle of caramel is all. 🙂

      1. PJ says:

Puddle of chocolate or caramel or both? The puddle description was awesome! Thank you!

      2. Fun size wife says:

        The chocolate goes down first.

      3. Sweet Basil says:

        A puddle of both. 🙂

  10. Joanna says:

Do you have instructions for melting the caramel? I tried this last night and it came out hard as a rock. Whoops!

    1. Sweet Basil says:

      Hi Joanna,
The real key is just low and slow and should end up silky smooth. 🙂 Great quality makes a difference too. So the cheaper the caramel the better chance of things going wrong.

      1. Adrienne says:

I melted the caramel in the microwave a little at a time and then just stirred it until it was warm. It was awesome!

      2. Sweet Basil says:

        Awesome!! Aren’t these so addicting?!
