Easy Brownie Batter Dessert Dip
Our girls have started cooking more and more, and while I love it, I also want to make sure that it always stays fun and not merely a means to eat. We found this darling new cookbook by Aimee from Like Mother Like Daughter called 50 Fixes for Brownie Mixes and knew it would be just perfect for Friday movie nights.
One of the most important things we want to teach our children is that family matters. We spend time together, we talk about silly stuff, real stuff and future stuff.
A good friend once told me that her mother taught her that her siblings were her best friends. If ever it became clear that siblings weren’t being nice to each other or constantly wanting to be with friends and not family, then they had a few days where it was sister time and they could only play with each other. What a lovely idea! To this day they are all the best of friends and that’s something to admire.

We now choose to do the same. In fact, our girls have been having sister dates. I take them somewhere and just sit back and watch them choose ice cream together or whatever.
I’m getting off topic, this brownie cookbook was a great chance for our girls to spend time together doing something fun. They can choose to cook from the cookbook whenever they want as long as it’s together. It’s so fun trying their new creations and this last weekend it was brownie batter dip. This chocolate dip is so good!!
The whole cookbook is loaded with beautiful pictures, easy recipes, and it’s all thanks to brownies — Cade’s Achilles heel. 😉

Brownie Batter Dessert Dip Ingredients
Whether you’re on the hunt for easy Valentine’s Day dessert recipes, easy party desserts, or simply want a snack for your family movie night, this creamy brownie batter dip is a must!
Here’s what you’ll need to make this chocolate dessert dip:
- Cream Cheese: full fat, softened to room temperature
- Cool Whip: let it thaw so it’s not frozen and clumpy when you mix it in
- Boxed Brownie Mix: any brand will do but our favorite is Ghirardelli
- Milk: helps thin the dip out
- Mini Chocolate Chips: These are optional but we love the texture it adds.
The measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card down below.

How to Make Brownie Batter Dessert Dip
This truly is such an easy dessert dip recipe! Exact instructions and measurements are included in the recipe card below, but here’s a brief explanation of how we make this brownie batter dip:
- Cream the softened cream cheese until smooth using an electric hand mixer.
- Mix in the Cool Whip.
- Add the brownie mix and milk.
- Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
- Serve with your favorite snacks!

Do I Need to Heat Treat the Brownie Mix?
I haven’t ever had a problem with brownie mix, but if you are concerned about eating raw brownie mix, then you can definitely heat treat it. It can be done in the oven or microwave. To heat treat in the oven, preheat the oven to 300 degrees F, spread the brownie mix in a thin layer on a baking sheet, and place in the oven for about 10 minutes.
To use the microwave, place it all in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30 second increments, stirring in between, until the temperature reaches 160 degrees F. Make sure the brownie mix cools completely before adding to the dip.
What to Serve with Brownie Batter Dessert Dip
One of the things I love most about this easy chocolate dessert is that it pairs well with pretty much anything! We like to have a variety of dippers for people to use. A few of our favorite dippers to dip into this easy holiday dessert recipe are:
- Pretzels or pretzel chips
- Cinnamon sugar pita chips
- Fresh fruit (strawberries, banana, and apple slices)
- Cookies (store-bought or homemade)
- Vanilla wafers
- Marshmallows
- Graham crackers

Is There a Cool Whip Substitute I Can Use?
We’ve only ever made this edible brownie batter dip recipe as written, so I can’t say for sure. You may be able to use homemade whipped cream in place of the Cool Whip whipped topping but make sure it is stabilized whipped cream so it holds its structure. Please let me know if you try this method!
Can I Prep Brownie Dip in Advance?
Yes! This easy party dessert can be made up to one day in advance. You’ll want to wrap it with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it.

Can I Freeze Brownie Batter Dessert Dip?
No, I don’t recommend freezing this chocolate dip. The cream cheese will break down in the freezer and the dip will change texture once thawed.
Storing Chocolate Brownie Dip
Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. It will keep for up to 4 days but it tastes the best and has the best texture within 24 hours of making it.

Tips for Making Brownie Batter Dessert Dip
For the richest, creamiest chocolate dip, you’ll want to use full-fat cream cheese that comes in a brick. The cream cheese also needs to come to room temperature before making this easy holiday dessert, otherwise the dip won’t whip up correctly.
You may be tempted to leave out those mini chocolate chips, but do not do it!!! They take the recipe from good to amazing. It breaks up the flavor and I found myself digging for them.
If you don’t like chocolate chips (who are you?!?!), try mixing in crushed Oreos. That would be fabulous! Other delicious mix-ins to try – mini m&m’s, peanut butter chips, Reese’s Pieces, or Heath Bits.
This dip has been a huge hit at bridal showers, baby showers, Super Bowl parties, birthday parties, or New Year’s Eve.
Lastly, note that you’ll be adding the boxed brownie mix to the chocolate dessert dip as a dry ingredient. Do NOT add the oil, eggs, or water that the box calls for! Just dump the mix straight from the box into the dip.

Indulge in the rich, chocolatey goodness of this irresistible brownie batter dip. Perfect for parties or as a decadent dessert, this recipe is sure to please your taste buds.

Would this recipes work with a cake mix? I thought I bought brownie mix when shopping but seem to have devils food cake mix instead.
Sweet Basil
Hey Addie! Absolutely!
Tina
Question, should you microwave the brownie mix for short time due to the flour component? I say this because it seems eating raw flour is a concern for E. Coli illness. Folks will say eggs with cookie dough, but I was thinking something about issues with raw flour has come out?
Thanks! This looks delish and we will definitely be making it! 🙂
Oh Sweet Basil
Hi Tina! You definitely can if you are worried about it. Let it cool completely before adding it to this recipe. Enjoy!
KSCook
Should the cool whip be thawed? Or use it frozen?
Sweet Basil
Hello! I like it to be just thawed enough that it’s easy to mix in. Enjoy!!

I made this amazing, yummylicious dip for my family one night. I beat the cream cheese, then added the coconut milk and brownie mix together, in small amounts, until all mixed together. I used Ghirardelli double chocolate brownie mix with chocolate chips and it saved me having to add choc chips. Then I folded in coco whip (coconut milk whipped topping) and served with graham crackers. It was heavenly and my family practically inhaled it. Lol. This is definitely a new favorite in our house. Thanks for sharing.😊
Sweet Basil
Love to hear this!! Thank you so much Theresa!
Ali
This looks great! Any idea how much it comes out to in cups with one recipe (10 servings)? Trying to figure out if I need to double it.
Sweet Basil
Hi Ali! It ends up being around 4 cups.
JKS
Just made this yummy dip to take to a family birthday celebration. Always a favorite, served with fresh strawberries.
Sweet Basil
Isn’t it so dreamy?! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Kathleen
Is there any issue with the flour in the brownie mix not being cooked in this recipe? In regards to food poisoning? I really want to make this, but don’t want anyone to get I’ll from it.
Sweet Basil
Hi Kathleen! We have never had an issue with that as it’s so rare, but if you are worried about it, you can bake the dry brownie mix at 180 degrees for 40 minutes beforehand. Enjoy!

I made this with my boyfriend a little while ago, and it was heavenly. I’m going to make it again, but I was wondering, do you have to use cool whip? I was going to make homemade whipped cream to add into the dip. Would that still work?
Sweet Basil
Yes, it will work, but it won’t hold it’s thickness for long. It would work better if you used stabilized whipped cream. https://ohsweetbasil.com/how-to-make-stabilized-whipped-cream-recipe/
So glad you enjoyed it!
Kristina
I made it and it was the most loved dish at our “dip day” at work, I mean I was sharing the recipe with everyone !! I’m making this again tonight!
Sweet Basil
You’ve made my day Kristina! And now you’ve also made me crave this dip! It’s irresistible!
Barbara
How long will this recipe keep in the refrigerator? This is the first time to make it.
Sweet Basil
Hi Barbara! It will last 3-4 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
Janine
Hello, this recipe looks fantastic! I’m going to try it this weekend but I have a couple quick questions.
You’re supposed to mix the cream cheese and the cool whip together with the hand mixer prior to adding the brownie mix, right? Normally, I would mix the brownie mix and the cream cheese together and then fold in the cool whip so it doesn’t lose its fluff. Is there a sciencey or textural reason for mixing in the cool whip with the hand mixer?
Also, I currently only have heavy whipping cream and almond milk in the house. Rather than buying milk for just 2 Tbsp, could I use one of those other alternatives?
Thanks!
Sweet Basil
I have found that Cool Whip holds up just fine with a hand mixer, but you could use the hand mixer just on the cream cheese and then fold in the Cool Whip. The cream cheese just needs some heavy beating to smooth out. You would use either the heavy cream or the almond milk! Almond milk would be healthier but heavy cream would be my choice! Same measurement for either!
Kristi Atcheson
Can you freeze the brownie dip? Just wondering if it will separate when thawed.
Sweet Basil
Hi Kristi! I wouldn’t recommend it. The cream cheese will break down and separate when it thaws.

We made the brownie dip for our housewarming party this weekend and loved it! We are happy that we had leftovers for the Super Bowl this weekend too. Such a good and easy recipe. We shared the recipe on our blog too!

Oh yay! So glad to hear that and thanks for the kind comment!
