Ingredients for Slow Cooker Chicken and Rice
My favorite thing about this recipe, besides how ridiculously good it tastes, is that it uses just 5 simple ingredients you probably already have on hand. Plus, it’s perfect for kids who are picky eaters. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Cream of Chicken Soup: Use store-bought or make your own from scratch (see section below).
- Butter: Unsalted is best, so you can control the saltiness.
- Italian Dressing Seasoning Mix: Find it near the salad dressings or other seasoning packets.
- Chicken Breasts: Boneless, skinless is ideal, and you can even use them frozen—it still works perfectly.
- Cream Cheese: Full-fat gives the best flavor, though reduced-fat works too; avoid fat-free.
- Rice: Serve this creamy chicken over white rice, brown rice, pasta, or mashed potatoes.
All the exact measurements are in the recipe card at the end of the post, so keep scrolling for the full details.

Tips For Crockpot Chicken

Prep: Spray the inside of your crockpot with cooking spray before adding ingredients for easy cleanup.
Veggie Boost: Add broccoli, carrots, frozen peas, or green beans to sneak in extra nutrition.
Creamy Swap: If you’re not a big fan of cream cheese, try stirring in a bit of sour cream or plain yogurt for a creamy finish.
Homemade Soup: Skip the can of cream of chicken soup and make your own with milk or cream, butter, flour, and simple seasonings. Our Cheesy Ground Beef and Rice Casserole post has an easy recipe, just omit mushrooms and add a few dashes of poultry seasoning.

Can You Make Chicken and Rice In The Instant Pot?
Want to make this creamy shredded chicken and rice recipe in record time? The Instant Pot has you covered.
Start by using the sauté function to cook the butter, cream of chicken soup, and Italian seasoning with the chicken breasts until everything is aromatic and slightly browned. Then lock the lid in place and cook on high pressure for 5 minutes. Quick release the pressure, shred the chicken right in the pot, and stir in the cream cheese until the sauce is velvety and smooth.
This method gives you rich, flavorful chicken with minimal hands-on time, perfect for busy weeknights or meal prep.

Extra Add-Ins and Sides
We usually serve this over brown rice or whole wheat angel hair pasta, but it would be delicious over mashed potatoes, too. I also love adding a vegetable to lighten up the meal! Roasted veggies or a fresh spinach salad are both perfect choices.
For extra flavor, try mixing in Montreal chicken seasoning, lemon pepper, onion powder, or your favorite spices while the chicken cooks. Depending on your taste, use anywhere from 2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon along with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Top the finished dish with fresh herbs like parsley or a sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese for an extra flavor boost. This shredded chicken is also perfect for Hawaiian haystacks, making it a super versatile recipe!
Storing and Reheating Crockpot Chicken and Rice
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. You can keep the chicken and rice together or separately.
Normally, dishes with a lot of cream or cream cheese don’t freeze well because they can curdle or separate, but this recipe works thanks to the soup base. Store the chicken separately and make fresh rice when ready to eat. Using a vacuum-sealed bag extends freezer life up to 1 month; freezer bags work for 2-3 weeks.
To reheat, thaw overnight in the fridge, then warm on the stovetop over medium heat, adding a splash of milk if needed. For single servings, the microwave works perfectly.
It’s up to you, and isn’t normally part of the recipe, but it’s a great addition. Sprinkling a fresh herb on top before serving would also amp up the flavor. Fresh parsley would be my first choice. Shredded cheddar cheese also makes a great topping for an added punch of flavor. This chicken can also be used for tasty Hawaiian haystacks too! It’s so versatile!

I made this the other night and it was delicious! I want to make it again.. is there oven instructions? I want a fast way to make it. Thank you!
Hi Lilly! Thank you so much for your support! For the oven, add all the ingredients for the chicken to a baking dish and bake for 35-45 minutes at 350 degrees. You could also do it on the stove top over medium low heat for 45 minutes.
I appreciate the nutrition facts label but what is serving size! for the chicken & rice recipe.
Hello! The serving size is about a cup of chicken and rice.
Made this last night and it was so good ! Didn’t have cream of chicken soup so I used mushroom and added a little poultry seasoning. I also added sliced mushrooms.
Next time I make it I am going to add diced carrots and frozen peas to up the visual appeal.
I will def make it again and serve it over rice.
Yay! Thank you so much for your feedback Deb! You could definitely add carrots and peas to it!
Love this over noodles and rice
It is definitely a family favorite for us! Thanks Ina!
I’m looking to prep meals in advance and freeze them–does this recipe work okay for that? If I freeze portions of it, will it thaw out okay and be just as tasty?
Yeah absolutely!!
hi, I am wanting to make this but I have one question: do I need to melt the butter. the recipe doesn’t specifically say what to do with the butter. Thanks!
Just softened will work fine. It will melts and incorporate in the sauce. Enjoy!
15 paragraphs and cant get the recipe to show. Worthless!!
Here’s a link to the printable recipe: https://ohsweetbasil.com/wprm_print/55056
Sorry for the frustration!
Is there anyway I can cook it for longer? I have to leave at 9 and have ppl over at 6. Would love to be able to make it for the day but don’t want it overcooked.
Does your crock pot have the feature were it switches to warm after the cooking time is done? If it does, you should be good to go. If it doesn’t, you could try cooking it for 8-9 hours but I’m afraid it might dry out.
I use a timer that plugs into the wall like you use for lamps when you aren’t home. Place everything in the crockpot put the timer on when I come home the house smells delicious
That’s a great tip! Thanks Donna!
I cannot find the actual recipe! Help!
Hi Jen! The recipe card is about half way down the post right underneath our list of other easy dinner ideas.
Hi! Can this be modified for the instant pot? I did away with my crock pot after I received the instant pot as a gift. This looks so delicious & I really want it for dinner!
Hi Elizabeth! Yes, you can cook it in the Instant Pot on Manual for 8 minutes but it won’t be quite as think and creamy.
