Back to French Toast

We used to love going on kid dates to Even Stevens, and we fell in love with their stuffed French toast. Two perfectly golden pieces of French toast filled with sweet cream cheese…it’s the perfect brunch or holiday breakfast!

It all starts with our best French toast recipe, and then you make a simple sweet cream cheese filling and basically make sandwiches. It’s so easy but it tastes gourmet!

Ingredients for Stuffed French Toast

Here is a quick list of the ingredients you will need to make this recipe. The measurements for each ingredient are listed in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • French Toast: brioche, egg, butter, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, flour, salt
  • Cream Cheese: make sure it’s room temperature so it doesn’t get clumpy
  • Powdered Sugar: used to sweeten the cream cheese without adding any graininess
  • Vanilla: flavor
  • Banana: nice and ripe to maximize sweetness
  • Berry Sauce: you can use any berries you want
  • Buttermilk Syrup: pretty much liquid gold, syrup of the gods, heaven’s nectar…you get the point!

How to Serve Stuffed French Toast

We love to top this dish with some stabilized whipped cream and powdered sugar! You could also top it with some chopped pecans or walnuts.

Because this dish is so sweet, I like to pair it with something savory like bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs or hash browns.

Variations on Stuffed French Toast

While we love this french toast topped with our triple berry sauce, the possibilities are endless and totally customizable to your preference. Here are a few ideas:

  • Fruit: use other fruits to make a sauce or syrup like peaches, cherries, plums, or apples you could also add fruit to the cream cheese filling
  • Nuts: top with almonds, walnuts, pecans, etc or you could even mix them into the filling
  • Stuffing: stuff Nutella, peanut butter, or another nut butter into the middle, you could also try a flavored cream cheese for the filling
  • Toppings: top with chocolate chips, toffee bits

What Bread is Best for French Toast?

You want a good hearty bread that will soak up the egg mixture but will also hold up and totally disintegrate. Our favorite bread for french toast is brioche or challah. If you can’t find either of those, French bread or Texas toast will also work fine.

How to Reheat French Toast:

  • Toaster: pop them in a toaster just like a piece of toast, the outside gets nice and toasty again.
  • Oven: place the French toast in a single layer on a baking sheet and warm them up in the oven at 300 degrees for 5-7 minutes.
  • Microwave: zap them in the microwave for about a minute, the outside won’t be crispy.

Breakfast just can’t get any better than French toast…until you stuff it with a sweet cream cheese filling! Booyah! Make this stuffed French toast for your next breakfast-for-dinner, brunch with the ladies, or fancy Saturday morning with the fam!

  • 8 Ounce Cream Cheese, softened
  • 3/4 Cup Powdered Sugar, or more to taste
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Banana, sliced
  • Berry Sauce, for topping
  • Buttermilk Syrup

Instructions

  • Heat a nonstick griddle to medium heat.
  • Make the berry sauce and set aside.
  • Prepare the french toast batter.
  • Prepare the filling by beating the softened cream cheese with the powdered sugar. Add the vanilla and beat until smooth. Fold in chopped bananas (we like them quartered).
  • Slice the bread and cover with a smear of filling. Top with another slice of bread and dip each side in the batter.
  • Heat an oven to warm with a large cookie sheet so you can put any finished french toast in to stay warm.
  • Butter the griddle and add the french toast. Cook until golden on each side.
  • Meanwhile, start on the syrup and allow it to cook while the french toast is cooking.
  • Remove to a plate and serve with berry sauce and syrup!
